Garmin's United States TOPO MapSource CD-ROM is similar to U.S. Geological Survey 1:100,000-scale topographic paper maps. It includes trip and waypoint management functions that allow you to transfer waypoints, routes, and tracks between your PC and nearly all Garmin GPS units (excluding the GPS 100 family and panel-mount aviation units). With MapSource, you can view highways, roads, hiking trails, snowmobile trails, backwoods trails, elevation contours, point and summit elevations, some bathymetric contours, geographic names, churches, and schools. Shoreline detail is included for lakes, reservoirs, small bodies of water, waterways, rivers, and streams. Icons represent boat ramps, dams, marinas, campgrounds, public facilities, mile markers, first aid stations, picnic sites, swimming areas, ski areas, wrecks, fuel locations, and dangerous and restricted areas.

In addition, nautical navigational aids for the 50 states are provided, including radio beacons, RACONs, and fog signals; river, harbor, and other lights; and day beacons and lighted and unlighted buoys. Shipwrecks, submerged rocks, obstructions, and other hazards to nautical navigation are also displayed.

Note on compatibility: The trip and waypoint management functions of this product work with nearly all Garmin GPS units, excluding the GPS 100 family and panel-mount aviation units. Specifically, the map-download features of this product work with the eTrex Legend, eTrex Vista, eMap, GPS V, StreetPilot, StreetPilot ColorMap, StreetPilot III, and GPSMAP 76, 162, 168, 176, and 295. Some units may require a Garmin data card to upload map data.

This review is from: GARMIN City Navigator Europe NT On MicroSD (Electronics) Unfortunately the EuropeNT Citimaps version of the Garmin Micro-SD did not live up to it's North American counterpart. Although I have not encountered problems with the latter, this chip either had "bugs" or just wasn't capturing and interpreting the satellite signals correctly. I tried it in Chambery, France, Geneva, Switzerland, and Francfurt, Germany and never got useful results. From the train station in Geneva it kept recalculating and had me walking in circles for 25min when in fact my hotel turned out to be 2 blocks away! I am a knowledgeable user and well aware of the various settings such as bicycle/pedestrian, map detail, routing, opting to avoid major roads, etc.. Again, not sure where the problem was but at times would lose the map altogether when walking/riding in normal outdoor settings. The "Find Places" feature was unusable as well. I attempted to calculate a route back to home base in France and it provided around a 60 kilometer route when in... So, we arrived in Paris CDG, took RER to the train stop I knew less than 100m from our Hotel, and took the nearest surface exit from the train station without realizing that it was the wrong surface exit (that was one of the bigger train stations with subway and RER transfer). We walked for several blocks only to mystify myself wondering why I didn't see the street signs I was supposed to. In the end, I pulled out my Garmin GPS with this SD plugged in, let it find where we were, found the Hotel's address, and say "Go", and discovered that we walked in the opposite direction for several blocks instead of walking for just a block! Yes, please laugh; that was what we did, too. Nonetheless, this SD card saved us a ton! Get this, you won't regret it. The street of our Hotel was not the map in Rick Steve's France book, but it was indeed in this SD, as you would expect. I have not yet tried it in places... I will be comparing the two in the review. Maps and Storage: The D20 comes loaded with a basemap, which has most major highways, but no streets. So for your purpose, you can choose City Navigator (required for auto navigation to work), or Topo 2008 (shows mountain countours & most lakes). Luckily, I had both Topo and City Nav on my computer. Since the D20 comes with 850mb of internal memory, it's enough for self selected regions in Topo 2008 and/or Inland Lakes map, but not for City Nav. I put in a 4gb microSDHC card, which handled the 1.2gb .IMG file of the city navigator map. What might trouble some is that the D20 does not come with Mapsource(a great program for making custom maps, and upload trails and routes) or any kind of software. The hCX comes bundled with Mapsource. Although if you purchase the City Navigator, it comes with Mapsource... I finally settled on either the Geomate, Jr., the Garmin Dakota, Garmin Oregon or DeLorme PN-40. I asked questions at forums, looked at on-line reviews, checked out the ones I could find in stores (Oregon and PN-20) and finally decided on either the Dakota 10 (a great price on a bundle was the big attraction at the time) or the Oregon 300. The Geomate got great reviews and the most reasonably priced of the group, but it's only good for one thing, geocaching, tho it does it well. The PN-40 also got pretty good reviews, but the screen is smaller than the Oregon's, the computer software is in addition to the device purchase and an annual subscription (at a very fair price tho) is needed for all the available advertised map features. It's also a device with a pretty steep learning curve, especially on the trip planning side. That left the Dakota and Oregon. My two concerns on the Dakota 10 was lack of an SD slot, and a... Garmin advertises this as their new entry level unit, but its 800 MB internal memory holds all of the topo and street maps for the eastern US. The inability to do street routing without first buying City Navigator� North America NT seems to be an artificial limitation. The lock in is almost instant when I turn it back on at the same location that I turned it off, and it can pick up a signal from inside my house. I no longer lose the signal when I go under deep forest cover. The screen is bright, and better than on my old unit. When I first got it, the compass was not functional, but once I updated the unit online, it worked great. I wholeheartedly recommend this unit.
