4.0 out of 5 stars Alternative to buying MapSource Topo 2008, June 29, 2008

First, I'm not knocking the TOPO US too much. It is expensive and does not have high resolution but it fills a niche. If you need a TOPO map in a hurry, I suppose it is the best alternative.

I've had my Garmin Legend HCx for several months now. During this time, I've hunted for a reliable alternative to TOPO US, rendering 24K resolution and not limited to a few National Parks.

Looking really paid off. The best solution that I've found is the following:

* Free Maps from USGS Seamless Server (24K TOPOs as GeoTiff files) $0
* Any graphics editor program that can handle .tif format $0
* Mapwell (Basic) Google to find (includes raster/vector conversion) $45
* TrackMaker (free version) Google to find $0

TOPO 2008 has some good points: it's half the price of most of Garmin's other cartography products, and it doesn't require an unlock code. Read some of the reviews on Garmin's "City Navigator North America" product - there are some real horror stories about the problems people have had with Garmin's unlock code system.
NOTE: In specific discussion of how TOPO 2008 interfaces with a GPS, the unit used in this review is a Garmin 60CX.

What you get with TOPO USA 2008 that's good:
1. It adds a lot of city streets and county roads that are not included in the base map. However, the positional accuracy of these roads is often pretty bad. But at least having them would probably help you find an address if you got lost in an unfamiliar neighborhood or rural area. Unfortunately though, the road network in TOPO 2008 IS NOT AUTO-ROUTEABLE. In other words, if you try to generate a point-to-point trip route in either MapSource or in the GPS itself, the route will not... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Garmin Topo US 2008 vs. DeLorme Topo USA, November 4, 2007

This review is from: Garmin MapSource 2008 Topographical U.S. Map DVD-Rom (Electronics)
I have been using DeLorme Topo USA to create trail routes and waypoints for hiking and backpacking trips for a number of years. I have also been using eTrex for GPS navigation for almost the same amount of time (I am now using Vista Cx). Recently, I purchased Garmin Topo U.S. 2008, hoping to save time to find/create trails and waypoints. But, I was wrong. Although the resolution and price of Garmin and DeLome products are about the same, Garmin Topo U.S. 2008 is a big disappointment. I spend more time with Garmin Topo U.S. 2008 to find trails and create waypoints. Below are my observations.

- It's impossible to find trails till you zoom in into about 1 mile resolution. Then, you loose a big picture of an entire trail. Also, it's very difficult to distinguish trails from roads and elevation contours - a display contrast is quite bad.

- Since it does not have a capability of selecting trail segments, it requires to manually creates a number of waypoints... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but no cigar, July 26, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Garmin MapSource WorldMap (CD-ROM) (Accessory)
I bought this to use with my Garmin eMap. For the USA the detail level is the same as came preinstalled on the unit--major highways. I've used it in London, Cambridge, Paris, Tokyo and Munich. There isn't really enough detail to find your way around any of these cities but it is useful for e.g. finding your way from suburb to suburb. The River Cam wasn't very close to where the map had it so it helps to use one's eyes. The maps are dated. We are developing a site in the high Andes near San Pedro de Atacama for the ALMA telescope--the map of that region did not show the Jama Road from Calama to Salta Argentina, a major international route (admittedly less than a decade old--but paved!).

1.0 out of 5 stars Complete WASTE of money, April 11, 2007
This review is from: Garmin MapSource WorldMap (CD-ROM) (Accessory)
Background on my use of Garmin products: First, let me say that I have been VERY HAPPY with my Garmin GPSMap 60CSx and using the CitySelect North America road maps for driving directions, finding restaurants, driving to a manually entered address, etc. I had been using them for 12 months when I got ready to leave on a trip to Europe for business.
Why did I start shopping for this product? Before I left on my trip, I had a hard time deciding if it would be worth the $350 to get the Europe MapSource. In addition to stops in the UK and Spain, we were scheduled to visit somewhere in Africa, too. We would only be in each country for a couple of weeks, so I didn't think it would be worth spending the money on the European MapSource.
Why did I end up buying this product? As a compromise, I thought this World Map (I bought version 3.02) would at least give me the base map and major roads and highways. My expectation was that it would not have anywhere near as much data or... Read more

I bought this product for hikes and to guide me in navigating rivers. Only very major roads are named so I can't use this very easily to calculate my route there. Most roads are there but they just vanish at some points and reappear in others. Using a real topo map it is immediately obvious that these same roads do not dissapear and in fact continue on their course uninteruppted like a road should. The elevations and detail are very course. No trails are shown. I am not very happy I bought this product and am going to look into the roads and recreation to see if it does a better job. FYI I bought this to use with my Etrex Legend which I think is just great.

After reading all the negative reviews, I was very reluctant to take the plunge with this product. However, as the date of my Vermont hiking trip approached, I decided to go for it.

I was very plesantly surprised. Here's what I found:

1. This product provides good BASIC topo maps for garmin GPS (I personally use an etrex legend). If you are looking for 1:24,000 level of precision with every obscure trail, fire road, etc. you WON'T find it here. However, I found the maps to be more than adequate for orienting myself and cross-referencing with USGS paper maps if necessary. (As others have repeated ad nauseam, you should ALWAYS carry paper maps in addition to electronic gizmos like this). Also, as other reviewers have pointed out, you can get good USGS-derived paper maps from Maptech.

2. My experience was that the accuracy was good, once I enabled the WAAS on my unit. I didn't encounter any of the missing lakes, etc. which others have... Read more

I got this software for use with my Garmin eTrex Summit, and found it to be less than adequate for my work. As a botanist in the northwoods, I cover a lot of territory each season. I need to be able to view accurate and complete topographic maps, plot my tracks and markers on these maps, and orient locations by legal description -- Township, Range, and Section line -- so that I know, for instance, when I'm crossing property lines, say from public to private land.

Mapsource's topo maps have few contour lines and omit many dirt roads, small lakes, and many other details. Most importantly, Township, range and section lines are omitted. In it's favor, Mapsource is easy to use. And the price is good: The entire U.S. for $100.

I later obtained MapTech's Terrain Navigator software, and it works much better for me. The details are almost as complete as USGS topo maps. Township, range and section lines are included, as are complete contour lines and even some abandoned, bermed roads (on... Read more
