Garmin's WorldMap MapSource CD-ROM provides worldwide coverage with base map-level detail, including political boundaries, cities, towns, major motorways and/or interstates, and principal highways; lakes, major streams, and rivers; and urban areas and railroads. WorldMap displays excellent coastline detail that includes many offshore islands, as well as worldwide nautical navigation aids such as day beacons, radio beacons, RACONs, fog signals, lights, and buoys. Also shown are U.S. interstate exit information, such as service stations, gas stations, restaurants, hotels, campsites, hospitals, banks, and more. WorldMap includes management functions that allow you to transfer waypoints, routes, and tracks between your PC and nearly all Garmin GPS units (excluding the GPS100 family and panel mount aviation units) while viewing base map-level maps on your PC screen.
It is recommended for use with the GPS III Plus, NavTalk, GPS 12MAP, and GPSMAP 162/168. It is compatible with StreetPilot GPS, StreetPilot ColorMap, GPSMAP 295, and eMap, which require a blank 8 or 16 MB cartridge for loading map data.

For the USA the detail level is the same as came preinstalled on the unit--major highways. I've used it in London, Cambridge, Paris, Tokyo and Munich. There isn't really enough detail to find your way around any of these cities but it is useful for e.g. finding your way from suburb to suburb. The River Cam wasn't very close to where the map had it so it helps to use one's eyes. The maps are dated. We are developing a site in the high Andes near San Pedro de Atacama for the ALMA telescope--the map of that region did not show the Jama Road from Calama to Salta Argentina, a major international route (admittedly less than a decade old--but paved!). 65 of 68 people found the following review helpful:  Complete WASTE of money, By This review is from: Garmin MapSource WorldMap (CD-ROM) (Accessory) Background on my use of Garmin products: First, let me say that I have been VERY HAPPY with my Garmin GPSMap 60CSx and using the CitySelect North America road maps for driving directions, finding restaurants, driving to a manually entered address, etc. I had been using them for 12 months when I got ready to leave on a trip to Europe for business. Why did I start shopping for this product? Before I left on my trip, I had a hard time deciding if it would be worth the $350 to get the Europe MapSource. In addition to stops in the UK and Spain, we were scheduled to visit somewhere in Africa, too. We would only be in each country for a couple of weeks, so I didn't think it would be worth spending the money on the European MapSource. Why did I end up buying this product? As a compromise, I thought this World Map (I bought version 3.02) would at least give me the base map and major roads and highways. My expectation was that it would not have anywhere near as much data or... It even has many of the old Lao 'Lima Site' airfields! |
